Oscars 2008: My Picks

I’m starting a tradition. Every year I’ll do practically what the rest of the fashion bloggers do — post their own best and worst dressed list from the Oscars Red Carpet. However, I choose not to name the worst, I’m not good describing what I don’t like when it comes to clothes.

For this year, sadly no Nicole for me. Here’s the rundown of my top 3 picks from the 80th Annual Academy Awards Red Carpet.

Exhibit A: Renee Zellweger in Carolina Herrera silver gown. I like that she went all metallic when practically everybody went black or into solid colors. And her silhouette is great and the dress showed her toned body.

Exhibit B: A very glowing and pregnant Jessica Alba in an aubergine Marchesa gown. I love the feathers which really accentuated the gown — I can’t imagine this standing out without those. I also like her “non-make up”, it’s perfect for her almost tanned skin color.

Exhibit C: Anne Hathaway in a bursting red gown from Marchesa. One-shoulder’s the in thing this season and I love the rosettes thinly draping on her shoulder. And Anne is gorgeous, I love the sling back look and the dropped earrings, she looked like a goddess. This is my most favorite.

As for accessories, I just have to put this special mention to Keri Russell’s necklace, it’s absolutely stunning. As I’m not particularly enchanted with chokers, I lsuper like this form, loose and done in multiple strands

what? really that’s all i can say. for a spring/summer collection, i find domenico and stefano’s color palette disturbing. black and white is not the color of summer, unless you’re valentino or chanel. the design is more urban contemporary; more like warehouse and industrial plants. i am hating myself in saying this, but the d&g house have renovated. i come to love dolce and gabbana for it’s clean lines and sexy cuts back circa s/s 2005, who would ever forget that extremely low waist jeans? gone are the days of high fashion and comes the era of deconstructed jeans, tops and inverted seams… though i am loving this croc skin jacket.

one word, love. just when i decided that john galliano is insane for the 2007 spring/summer haute couture collection, he surprises me with a breath taking 2007-2008 fall/winter couture. this,

i specially love. it’s very couture without the over the top touch of couture + galliano. so different from his japanese inspired origami collection. this speaks volume and sophistication. is it time for tea and crumpets deary?

i feel i’ve abandon my baby… anyhoo, i just purchased this amazing-amazing mouse/pointing device.

it’s the logitech mx610. it’s a smart mouse, really smart! it has 10 buttons that does 12 things. the cool thing for me is that it has 2 buttons that lights up… oohhh… ahhh… these buttons are the mail and instant messaging buttons that run/make active the application associated to it. and if i have new mails or new messages, the button lights up! cool huh? i dunno, i’m addicted to gadgets.

Tips on Wearing Prints

Got these rules on wearing polka dots, plaids and paisley all together from my porma planner:

1. Polka dots, stripes, and checks, which are all geometric, mix well with decorative, floral patterns. It’s where modernity meets romanticism.

2. If one bold, printed piece is shiny, off set it with something that is three-dimensional, like velvet or jacquard.

3. Small-sized prints work best when they come from the same color family. Otherwise, print sizes should be different.

4. You can definitely wear jewelry with your patter-happy outfit. Just pick one solid color from the prints, and take your cue from there.

5. Think about your whole ensemble because mixing and matching various patterns take time and effort.

Plaid is cloth made with alternating stripes and bands of color woven into or dyed onto the fabric. This makes blocks of color that repeat vertically and horizontally in a pattern of squares and lines.

Paisley or Paisley pattern is a droplet-shaped vegetal motif of Persian origin, similar to half of the Yin yang symbol, the Indian bodhi tree leaf, the mango tree, leeches, even paramecia (if viewed under a microscope).

Velvet is a type of tufted fabric in which the cut threads are very evenly distributed, with a short dense pile, giving it its distinct feel.

Whenever I visit my friend Dette-dette in QC, she always gives me paba-on. Nope, not food, but accessories, a girl’s ultimate best friend, one she can never get enough of. Dd handmade all of them herself and chose all the materials. I’m very proud and happy to share some of what she gave me . It’s perfectly versatile with come-from-behind colors! You may click on the pictures to see them up close or on when I wore it . Thanks Dette! You should insure your hands .

There’s a Kind of Hush. If you see a brown accent stone, it’s not out of place, it actually brought a hint of quirkiness in the design.

Summer Breeze’07. I love the mustard yellow, and coolness of the blue.

Apple Martin (son of Chris and Gwyneth — I love Chris). I thought of a baby’s name and Apple Martin comes to mind. The colors here remind me of cooing and freshness — like babies .

chanel has this understated, minimalist approach to fashion that simply works. thanks to coco chanel for her vision and effort to bring back this fashion house after world war 2. ain’t this bag to die for? i like the charm tassel detail and simplicity of the shape. it allows the texture of the material (calf leather) and structured shape with few metal zip details to say it all. even the size is just right; a snug fit to your shoulder.

I never own a single Havaianas slippers, I own a “Havanas” slippers though — obviously a Havaianas ripoff and I got it for free when I bought a cutie bag from some independent store in Podium. Surprisingly it’s comfortable and I thought, why bother buying the real one? And then I discovered Ipanema which contains different variation of slippers: they have sandals!

Streetchic and I love Ipanema! It’s comfortable and the designs are stylish! Our loot below: I (right) got mine with straps at the back so I can wear it while swimming and during snorkeling. Streetchic (of course, left) got her flipflops for beachwalking and the base design is so “summer”. Yun yung term namin ngayon, “so summer!”

It’s so soft, you can walk for miles with these slippers/sandals! And it’s even great in jeans for citywalking! I got mine in Shoe Salon and I think it’s also available in Shoemart.

armani goes skinny

spring/summer 2007 fashion accessory, the skinny belt. yep, i am so obsessed with skinny belts. this is my 2nd skinny belt, the first one is a gold studded piece that looks amazing with any jeans that i wear. this A|X calf skin skinny belt would look good with my blue-grey and green-grey viktor jeans and black dior homme. i was looking for the white one that i saw at the glorietta branch however they don’t have it in tutto moda. well this one is a find anyway. skinny belts are such a difficult accessories to find in manila. good thing that the boutiques i frequent carries s/s2007 accessories as well.
